Description
Mycobacterium leprae is a bacterium that, along with Mycobacterium lepromatosis, causes leprosy (Hansen’s disease).
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that damages the peripheral nerves and targets the skin, eyes, nose, and muscles. It manifests as unattractive skin sores that are pale in color, lumps or bumps that do not go away after several weeks or months, nerve damage which can lead to complications with the ability to sense feeling in the arms and legs as well as muscle weakness.
