Description
Chlamydophila pneumoniae is a species of Gram-negative bacteria that is known to be a major cause of pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, respiratory infection, coronary heart disease, and atherosclerosis in humans. It is an airborne bacteria and about 50% of adults have evidence of previous infection by the age of 20.
During an outbreak in Taiwan, it was known as acute respiratory agent (TWAR).
Infection with C. pneumoniae is a significant risk factor for development of atherosclerotic plaques and Atherosclerosis.
